Foodsnobs: Grip Mediterranean
H. Drew Blackburn
Senior Staff Writer
Grip Mediterranean is the new kid on the Fry Street block. The interior is an upscale modern design with a relaxed atmosphere. Though the prices are steep – $7 for just a pita wrap or a salad, and an extra $3 to make it a meal – the addition brings some much-needed variety and options to this densely populated area.
The wraps and salads are made with fresh ingredients on an assembly line à la Chipotle. The Kafta, with grilled, seasoned beef and lamb, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, turnip, hummus and tahini sauce, is one of the five options for wraps on a white or wheat pita.
Behind the assembly line are refrigerators with wooden boxes full of fresh vegetables, and a large, open skillet sits within plain sight, where the cooks grill up the fresh meat for each wrap.
The wrap has a lot of ingredients at work but they all blend together to make a tasty Mediterranean snack. When purchasing a meal, the options for sides are either fries or fried cauliflower. The fried cauliflower is a pleasant surprise. A thin layer of crisp lies on top of the tender cauliflower and accents the taste of the vegetable.
For those more keen on salads, Grip has three options: a Caesar, a Greek and a Mediterranean. The portions are generous and can fill a starving student.
Some extra side items available for purchase include pita chips, baklava, dolmas and hummus. The prices for sides range from $1 for the pita chips to $4 for hummus.
Grip Mediterranean has all of the makings to be a top-notch Mediterranean cuisine spot in Denton. Lovers of the cuisine should welcome it with open arms, but those who don’t have a palate familiar with Mediterranean, think twice before trying something new.
